Why do people wear rainbows for Pride Month?

June is a time of celebration and solidarity for the LGBTQ+ community, marked by vibrant parades, heartfelt events, and an explosion of rainbow colors. But have you ever wondered why the rainbow has become such a significant symbol during Pride Month?

Pride Month commemorates the Stonewall Riots of June 1969, a pivotal moment in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. June was chosen because of that pivotal moment as a month dedicated to celebrating diversity, equality, and the ongoing struggle for LGBTQ+ rights. The rainbow flag, created by artist Gilbert Baker in 1978, was designed to reflect the beauty and diversity of the LGBTQ+ community. Each color in the flag represents a different aspect of the community: red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, blue for harmony, and purple for spirit. The rainbow motif quickly became a universal symbol of LGBTQ+ pride and solidarity, representing love, inclusivity, and the spectrum of human sexuality and gender.

People began to wear the rainbow as a visible sign of their identity and support for the LGBTQ+ community. The bright, multi-colored symbol appeared on clothing, accessories, and jewelry, allowing individuals to express their pride and ally-ship in a simple yet powerful way. The rainbow motif spread rapidly, becoming a staple in Pride parades and events around the world. It signifies a commitment to equality and serves as a beacon of hope and acceptance. By wearing the rainbow, individuals signal their support for LGBTQ+ rights and celebrate the diversity that makes the community so vibrant.

At Son of a Sailor, we wanted to honor this powerful symbol by incorporating it into a line of jewelry. Some of our most popular pieces, including the Septima Pattern Necklace, Irena Bracelet, Septima Pattern Hoop Earrings, Septima Bracelet, and Irena Anklet, now feature stunning rainbow patterns to celebrate Pride Month. These pieces not only add a vibrant touch to your wardrobe but also serve as a reminder of the progress made and the work still needed to achieve true equality. At Son of a Sailor, we love that we get to make jewelry that becomes a part of your self expression.

Celebrate Pride Month with us by wearing rainbows whether they are from our collection or ones already in your jewelry box. Happy Pride y'all!
