The Joan Necklace is named after Joan of Arc, the young girl who helped inspire the recovery of France from English domination late in the Hundred Years' War. She was famously burned at the stake for a variety of reasons, including witchcraft, but was later declared a martyr by Napolean Bonaparte. In 1803 she was declared a national symbol of France.
