We made our first donation today!

Posted by Jessica Knopp on

We are thrilled to make our first (of many, we hope) donation to METAvivor, a wonderful organization dedicated to the specific fight of women and men living with stage 4 metastatic breast cancer.

For each of our FUCK CANCER necklaces sold, we give $20 directly to this organization.

This whole endeavor came about as we struggled to find a way to send good vibes and energy to our incredible cousin, who was on her own journey through cancer. So we made her a necklace -- it's what we do! Well, she loved it, and knew many other folks that she thought needed this sentiment, as well. So we've added it to our lineup, but with the caveat that we're sending a large portion of the profit directly to her nonprofit of choice.

So every month, we'll tally up the total necklaces sold and send $20 for each one their way.

Thanks for supporting! And if you want to send your money directly their way, here is a link to donate!

American Made Leather Goods

Posted by Jessica Knopp on

As a small maker business, we talk a lot about being handmade, but I wanted to take a moment to delve deeper into our process. There is beauty in the details, and a lot of the quality that we boast comes from our materials.

We have designed many leather goods as a part of our Supply line, and we are very proud to use genuine leather from Wickett & Craig, a US tannery. What that means is that we are working with an American company to source beautiful, high-quality leather that comes from North American cattle. While there are many beautiful leathers that come other countries, we are proud to produce leather products that are fully Made in the USA!

The leather that we source is also vegetable tanned, which is a traditional method used by skilled craftspeople that uses organic and biodegradable materials. It is more difficult and takes more time than alternative chemical-based methods, but results in gorgeous, heritage-quality leather hides.

We bring full and partial hides into our studio where we cut, stitch, and finish each piece. Our designs include pieces inspired by origami, the effort to create pieces from single pieces of leather, and donning hand-painted blocks of color, patterns, and accents.

Your Son of a Sailor leather good is a piece with a rich history--it is built with integrity from local materials. Using time-honored traditional processes and with great care and attention to detail, our leather items are heirloom pieces that are ready to join you on your journey.

Take a closer look at the leather that we use in this video from Wickett & Craig, and shop our leather goods here!

Bottle Openers Inspired by the Desert Southwest

Posted by Jessica Knopp on

Trips to West Texas, our travels through New Mexico and Arizona, and state and national parks have always provided tons of inspiration. Welcome our new line of bottle openers for your bar and your keychain!

We're adding four new shapes to our popular Saguaro cactus and Sidewinder snake shape. Introducing the Roadrunner, Thunderbird, Texas, and Horseshoe openers!

All of the openers are available in classic raw steel -- showcasing the natural characteristics of the metal, it's patina shifts over time with use and exposure. We seal each piece with a light lacquer to give it just a little bit of sheen. Each shape is also available in beautiful bright brass, for a golden shine.

We're open!

Stuff about being open and pandemic hours and things. We'll talk about stuff that you might want to know about! Maybe not, but hopefully so!

Billy and Jessica’s lives are rooted in the art of making things. Their relationship began in San Francisco, where Billy met Jessica after returning from a year-long trip around the world. Before settling down in Texas, the two fostered a long-distance relationship by sending handmade gifts to one another. A graphic designer and screenprinter by trade, Billy’s work takes on organic forms while Jessica’s background in fine art photography gives her a strong eye for framing, precision and composition. Son of a Sailor was born out of their shared love of thoughtful design and the ways it can spark joy in the lives of others.
