Son of a Sailor items are handmade with care and great detail. Please keep in mind that no two handmade items will be exactly alike. There will be slight differences, as much as we try to remain consistent.

If you are not pleased with your item, please let us know so that we may do our best to make you happy! 

 

CARE INSTRUCTIONS

We offer a broad assortment of items, and care instructions will vary from one item to another. Below is information about many different materials we use, that we hope will help in aiding in the long life of your product. If you have any questions about your Son of a Sailor item, or aren't sure exactly which materials your item is made of, don't hesitate to contact us -- we are happy to help!

Femina

Our FEMINA collection is made of hand-forged brass, cast bronze, silver and gold-filled chain, and various ceramic beads and gemstones. The chain used in the collection is sterling silver or 14k gold-fill, which should last for a lifetime of wear. If it becomes dirty, just wipe with a dry cloth. The pendants in this collection are made of hand-forged silver, brass, or cast bronze, all of which can be cleaned using a polishing cloth and should be kept in a clean dry place. You can use a jewelry polishing compound if you desire, but we recommend regular polishing with a jewelry polishing cloth to maintain the finish. Gemstones should be wiped clean with a dry cloth, and you should avoid exposing them to polishing compounds. All jewelry should be removed before swimming or showering to ensure the quality of the piece.

Brass

Brass is a metal that antiques, or oxidizes, over time. With exposure to the elements (moisture, salt in the air, etc.) brass tarnishes and will grow to a dark golden brown finish. Unpainted, raw brass may be polished to restore its shine. Many of our items are hand-painted or have a patina applied, and should not be polished. 

Leather

Leather items should be kept in a clean, dry place and not worn while showering or swimming. If necessary, painted portions can be wiped with warm water and mild soap, and leather may be spot cleaned. Leather will become more brittle and less conditioned with repeated exposure to water, so it is best to avoid getting leather items wet.

Wood

Many of our wood products are hand-painted, such as the knives and flash drives. These items are finished with a clear coat to protect the finish, but should be handled with care and kept in a dry, clean environment. Items will earn a patina of wear with regular use.

Raw wood items like the Baker cutting board and the London valet are finished with conditioning oils to maintain the finish of the wood. The cutting board should not be put in the dishwasher, but rather should be washed by hand and dried immediately after wash. Regularly adding oil (like cutting board oil or olive oil) will keep wood conditioned. The London valet should be wiped with a dry cloth, and wood conditioner may be added if necessary.

Shave Kit

Our Victor shave kit features an all-natural soap that can be used in its concrete cup. Simply wet the shave brush, and lather the soap within the cup. After shaving, it is recommended that the brush be hung to dry and any excess water be poured out. Keep your Victor shave kit dry when not in use, and avoid pouring water directly into the cup. Shave brushes may be hung to dry for best results.

PACKAGING

Items are typically packaged in a stamped muslin bag. A gift wrapped option is available at checkout. If you would like your item packaged in a box, please leave a note on your order or contact us --- we're happy to do so.

RETURNS

Son of a Sailor accepts returns on most new, unused items within 14 days of delivery for a full refund. Son of a Sailor is not responsible for item loss or damage in-transit. We recommend shipping items with delivery confirmation to avoid issues. When returning, please repackage items with care to avoid damage en route.

Exchanges may incur additional shipping charges. 

Sales are final on: all custom items, sale items, and all apothecary, consumable goods, and any items marked “final sale”.

If you would like to return an item, please contact us with your order number and details about the product you would like to return. We will respond quickly with instructions for how to return items from your order. 

If an item is returned to us for a refund that is not new, appears used, or is damaged, a refund may not be possible. A percentage of the original price may be forfeited, or a return denied entirely. Son of a Sailor is not liable for any shipping charges that may be necessary to send back an item in the event that it is not returnable.

If your item arrives damaged, please provide photographs of the packaging and the damaged item. Son of a Sailor is unable to assist in filing an insurance claim without proper documentation of the package. Notify us immediately so that we can work to resolve the issue as quickly as we can.

SHIPPING

Items will be shipped from our Austin, Texas studio within 1-3 business days. Please allow additional time for custom orders, or items with a longer lead-time indicated in the product listing. 

Son of a Sailor ships via USPS for all standard shipping options. First-class mail and Priority mail options are available. UPS and/or FedEx shipping options are also available.  If the shipping option you desire is not shown, please don’t hesitate to contact us to make arrangements.

Shipping rates for many of our items are weight-based. The weight of any such item can typically be found on its detail page. To reflect the policies of the shipping companies we use, all weights will be rounded up to the next full pound.

International orders will be accompanied by a customs form that states the full value of the item(s) you're purchasing. Please note that your country may levy duties, taxes, and/or customs charges for your purchase. Son of a Sailor is not responsible for any import charges your country may impose, nor will we misrepresent what we are shipping to you.

We do our best to ship with integrity. Ultimately, international buyers are responsible for bringing any packaging requirements specific to their country to Son of a Sailor’s attention.  

When shipping international orders via the US Postal Service we are unable to track your package once it leaves the United States. Additionally, insurance claims for USPS International shipments can be difficult or impossible to collect on, especially if the package is lost or damaged after it leaves the United States. The only courier services that provide tracking for international packages, and more reliable insurance claim processes are those such as UPS and FedEx. 

All items shipped via USPS include insurance, and Son of a Sailor is not responsible for delays, damage or loss. We will do our best to ensure the arrival of your package and send tracking information accordingly. If your package arrives damaged, please save the packaging and photo document the incident upon arrival so that an insurance claim may be processed.
